Where do I start with hooking up intelligent lighting for parties?

Rave?now! asked:

I throw a lot of big parties at my house. I have a really nice sound system, but I’m lacking a cool lighting setup. I would like to have a lighting system that went with the music, like a sound activation, or at least something where I could control everything at once or from one area. I’m looking to just hook up strobes, lasers, possibly black lights. I see all this stuff about controllers, DMX, channels, chasers, etc. and I’m very lost. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can use X-10 or Insteon to control your static lights.

DMX is more or less similar to MIDI, but for lighting, at least that is my take. You can have programmed chase sequences, or likely sync it to music.

You can have a basic “blink lights to music” with a color organ. You gan get or make simple light chasers. [who] classicsat
