What kind of lighting would I use to take professional pictures for an online clothing store?
ena asked:
I am creating an online store and was wondering how I can get professional looking pictures without having a photographer do it for me. I have a mannequin and I know I would most likely need a backdrop and good lighting.. I have a 10 megapixel digital camera, so that is already set. Just curious to what I would need to buy to get that nice look, for example on 80spurple.com — thank you!

Professional images are made by pro photographers. Houses are built by builders, teeth are fixed by dentists.
If you have the time go study photography, you could use 2 or three off camera flashs, 2-3 constants or a combination.
You could buy or make a large light tent.

For clothing IMHO you want the clothes to really stand out. A high key set up is the way to go. High key is when you have a white backdrop and a white floor and you drown the background in light so it completely disappears.
From the website you posted here is an example of high key
There are ways to do it on a budget. For best results you need a digital SLR camera. There are a couple sellers on Ebay that sell high key lighting kits really cheap (under $200). If your mannequin is simular to the one in the link I posted thats ok but don’t make the mistake of using a scary looking mannequin. A dress form of some kind is so much better.
Try to google “High key lighting” for more info about how to set something like this up. [who] Liz
