I have two map hatchlings. What kind of lighting (ie. heat lamp) do I need and how many watts?

  1. Courtney L says:

Full spectrum lighting with both UVA and UVB rays..you can get them at any pet store.50-100 watts. [who] Courtney L

You need a UV-B fluorescent light for them. Without UV-B light, they won’t be able to metabolize the calcium they get in their diet. Also, they need a basking area that is about 85-90 degrees. A 75-watt heat bulb should do it.
You should also have a water heater to keep your water temperature up around 80 to 85 until your turtles get a good bit bigger. Air and water thermometers are very important for keeping track of temperatures. [who] Spooky Wan

you actually need two lights, one is just a vita light that will provide vitamin D and the other is a ultraviolet blue night light that will provide minerals and vitamins at night as well as heat and they both cost a bit [who] meesh1902
