I take it you are talking about a studio shoot.

I can tell you what I use and where I bought it.

I use a Lowel Tota-light with umbrella and stand, a 42 inch 5 in 1 collapsible reflector with stand and a Savage portable background stand.

B&H Photo can supply all of those pieces to get you on your way to shooting in your own studio.

Later when you have the “big bucks” you can buy studio flash units … about $8,000 for a complete 4,000 w/s set with all the things you don’t need now … like barndoors, scrims, snoots, gobos, etc. [who] fhotoace

day light is the best light on a budget, work lights ar cheep. if you are shooting at home and on a budget move spot lamps tabel lamps and loft lights to 1 room to boost the room light [who] Mike

The only thing you _don’t_ need is a flash sitting on the camera pointing at the subject. After that, it is a matter of using what light you have.

A good way to start is with natural light – just be aware of harsh shadows, that’s the enemy of an appealing photo. The best initial investment you can make is not in expensive lights, but in a reflector. These come with interchangeable covers – gold gives very warm skin tones, white reflects diffuse light into shadows.

If you are going into a studio without natural light to shoot, then a softbox is the first thing to look for, but you can find studio “starter kits” that are quite reasonably priced that mostly have two to three lights and a variety of heads. That reflector you’ve got is still going to be useful. [who] londondailyphoto
