Essentially, in the computer, the various artists are creating the stage, placing and animating the characters, And it is the lighting designer's job to make that stage look as good as possible. If the scene is supposed to be in the daytime, there should be a sun, and an accurate color and intensity of light for that sun. But there can't only be a sun, like in a film, some of the characters may need bounced light, or dappled shadows. Other of the characters might not look right with the light facing the wrong direction, or they might need a light to see a reflection in their eye. Whatever the situation, The characters, just like real actors, need proper lighting to look their best. Also dramatic light is often called for, and the lighters would work under a cinematographer to get everything correct.
