What is best for photography lighting and backdrops?

Lighting just depends on your personal taste… some people prefer hot lights, some perfer strobes, some prefer daylight, others a mix. I personally like strobes.
As for backdrops, Owen’s Originals has decent prices. I’ve used him a few times, and have been pretty happy. Check out the packages he has here:

I am somewhat new at this too! lol i am getting started in the photography bizz and so far i have only my camera and the things it comes with it but some time next month i am buying my lighting equipment. I did find some reasonable prices at this website….owens-originals.com… they do have kits for lighting and they have some really nice muslin backgrounds as well as digital backdrops. If you get you lighting kit with them they actually give you 2 or 3 cds free!! and you get 2 muslin backgrounds as well which i thought it was pretty cool!! Like i said i am still deciding on which to get either the softboxes or Umbrellas.. i do hear softboxes are more expensive so i may get the SB Kit and later on buy me some umbrellas, which are a lot cheaper =) i hope this has helped you and good luck in the business!!
