I have my camera, backdrops and now I’m just trying to figure out what is the best lighting for my small in home studio. I know I need a strobe, but how important is a soft box? Would both work best together?

Read up on what your going to be after, ask lots and lots of questions. Going through that third link I gave you will tell you a whole lot.
If you still want some studio lights take a look at the alien bees lineup. If you find something cheaper I’d ask around to see if others have used that gear and if it’s any good. You’ll be glad you did.
