Lightning is caused by difference in electric charges, also known as charge separation. The updraft in thunderclouds blows ice crystals upwards, making them rub against each other and “steal” each other’s electrons. This makes the top of the cloud positively-charged, while the bottom is negatively-charged. As a thundercloud moves over the Earth’s surface, an equal but opposite charge is induced in the Earth below.
When the strength of the electric charges becomes sufficient, they can form a channel of ionised air between them, and the lightning would strike through that channel, thereby neutralising the electric charges.
