What can I do about fluorescent lights that sometimes take hours to light?
gonzldjfwrrr asked:
We have a set of fluorescent lights in our kitchen. When we throw the switch: Sometimes they immediately light up. Sometimes they light up after a time. Sometimes they never light up at all. It seems they are taking longer and longer to light up. What should I do to have them light up when I turn them on?

Check the bulbs to make sure they are secure in the sockets. If that doesn’t help, you probably need to replace the bulbs or even the fixture itself. [who] EvilWoman0913
I find that there’s normally a circular type thing put into the side of the holder and if it is getting old it takes longer to light up,twiddling it makes it light up quicker, don’t know if this helps. [who] mejejam
some flourescent lights have a small aluninum starter. they wear out. pull off the cover and see if it has one. they are pretty cheap. [who] jay p
ya i agree with jay p answer and here what the starter looks like

Twiddling, mejejam? Hehehe, there’s some redneck engineering. If twiddling doesn’t work and replacing the bulbs doesn’t work, then the only other problem will be with the ballast in the fixture. Ballasts are susceptible to heat and cold, so if your attic is very hot or cold, then that could very well be the problem. The fact that you say the lights take longer and longer to light up suggests ballast degradation. It sounds like the ballast has gone south, in which case it may be cheaper to replace the fixture than the ballast. [who] prime8
