What are the laws for using custom lighting in a motor vehicle in Virginia?

someone asked:

I’m planning on changing my dash and other lights to a blue color using LEDs, and I was going to put blue LEDs under the dash and passenger side glove box to light the floor- and also use some neon or LED lighting for my trunk (also in blue)..

I know neons are somewhat illegal in Virginia, but why can’t we use them inside on the floor, where outside viewers cannot see? Anyways, thanks in advance!

Nothing is “somewhat illegal.” It is either legal or it isn’t. What you are asking is what is the rationale for the law. Call up the Department of Motor Vehicles and ask them. It probably has to do with creating a dangerous distraction for the driver. [who] RK

Your best bet would be to either contact your local police dept or the dept of motor vehicles. Thing is, it is illegal to drive while you have your inside dome light on because it inhibits view so even though you are talking about putting neons inside and not outside (where you know it is illegal), Im betting inside isnt going to work either.
