I purchased a book about lighting and found myself a bit overwhelmed with the seemingly random order in which information was provided. It made it hard to wrap my head around.

For perspective I’ve recently spent a considerable amount of time learning about exposure and white balance, but feel I don’t know nearly enough about light. Interested in information regarding both studio and natural lighting.

    Practice, Practice and more Practice.

There is only so much you can learn on your own by reading. So either take an accredited program at a community college or university or just practice. The great thing about modern digital is you can take thousands of practice shots at little cost except your time. SD memory is down to $7 for 2Gig which will hold more than 500 pictures. Get friends or relatives to model for you if you want to practice. [who] vbasic

Practice and experience are two things you can NEVER get enough of.
Reading can give you a great amount of know-how but nothing is as valuable as both practice and experience.

Here is a great way to get started to exploring lighting
He does a lot of great lighting in his videos and explains how hes doing it.

Im just an old 35mm guy. I found its better to shoot on an overcast day instead of a sunny one. Also if your shooting Northern Lights to leave the shutter open for a bit. Love pics, take lots! [who] kniksand

day light is the best light that’s the most important thing you need to know about lighting.

a few other good tips is take as many pictures as you can the more you take the better you will slowly become.

carry a little Pocket note book with you at all times write down any ideas you get that you might want to shoot later on and when your shooting your pics write down your F-stop your shutter speed how the day was when you took the picture and what number the picture was when you shoot it. this all helps when your printing if your printing with film and this all help with digital as well. if you have all this info you can easily reproduce the photo if you need to.

one last thing i do is a carry a thin digital camera with me wherever i go so if i see something i like i pull it out and take the picture. this has helped me so much i can even put it into words. [who] poweredbysleep
