I have looked at Insteon, X-10 and HAI products, but would like to know if any can be installed in a home where the lighting is all pre-wired in the cieling (recessed lights)

What I have is several rooms where my builder wired up to 10 wall/cieling lights to one switch. I would like to separate some of them and put dimmers on others. Is it possible to use the Insteon type relays to automate individual lights?

We use X10 in our house. What you want is several in-line modules that you put in the ceiling between the light fixture and the wiring. You’d need one for each fixture. We have one in our kitchen. They work best where you can leave the basic wall switch intact and leave it on all the time, controlling the various lights in the room with a wireless wall switch or switches. (We have also found that they are not as reliable if you replace the original wall switch with a dimming switch or an X10 switch. Something to do with the interrupted circuit, I think.) Anyway, once you have the modules in place, you can get the wireless wall switches that include a dimming switch which will dim the last light turned on. (We also have this in our kitchen and are able to dim the pendant lights over our island counter top). [who]
