For portraits you’re best off with four lights, around $1,000 is inexpensive for lights that won’t be broken and unable to be repaired in a year.

Check out these guys; I bought a set of lights from them and I’m happy with the quality. I should have picked a more powerful set but I got what I needed.

it depends what you want to photograph as your subject. start with a basic 3 light setup available from adorama.com and lots of other online and brick and mortar retailers for under $200 and go from there. [who] D L
For a beginner trying to learn studio photography lighting you can get one of the cheap sets off of Ebay. You’ll see 3 lights flash setups for around 250-350. They will last about a year or two depending on how you use them. After they die just buy another one, they are not worth the cost of bulb replacements because of labor. After the learning experience you can upgrade yourself to bigger and better lights after you know what you’re doing.

I would look for hotlights when first starting out. The reason is they are WYSIWYG What you see is what you get. They will really help you hone your skill. Only downside is they do get very hot so if you are in a small space that could be bad.
You can buy these kinds of lights on ebay [who] Angie
