Gallo asked:

I have a little experience with switching out globes and simple electric wiring. How much more difficult is it to install recessed lighting?

The developers left two holes that are capped off in our lower floor and I’d like to throw in some more light. Is it a similar and non time consuming project?
I believe they already wired everything to a switch in the wall. There’s a switch on the wall that leads to nothing, so I believe they ran the wiring to the two holes to that one switch….

To do it well is not that hard but you need to add a switch and find power. Placing the lights is the easy part especially if the holes are already made.

It is like any project. About three times more expensive and time consuming than originally anticipated. I would go for it. [who] GSXRRider

Not really a complicated task. Biggest problem could be if you’re wired to a wall switch. You need to check the holes to see what’s there. Check the dimensions- depth and width. Recessed lights are designed for different applications. You must know if there is insulation around the proposed area, or if it is clear. The canisters get hot, so some come with an insular shell. I would talk with an electrical rep at one of the builders supply stores. Also, read through a lighting book at the store. They will have a section on recessed lighting that you can glance at without buying the whole book. [who] riderpops

I’ve done quite a few “after construction” lights and it is quite easy. The instructions are contained in each light bucket. Pay attention to the wattage of lighting you prefer as this will dictate the unit you will purchase.

Here’s an animated tutorial on installing: [who] mrNetVestor

as long as you’ve got simple experience then the only pain would be gettin the fixtures flush, but it really ain’t that hard [who] Daniel S
