Installing Home Depot track lighting – Voltage Question?
007 asked:
As the title states, I’m installing a standard track lighting system on my ceiling. It will be wired directly where a previously existing ceiling fan is located. I want it to be dimmable. My question is in the voltage and how I determine if I need a Magnetic Low Voltage Dimmer or a Electronic Low Voltage Dimmer? Which one will make a humming noise or give spikes in the dimming? Links would be great too. Thanks!

Assuming that the track lighting is 120volt you can use a regular dimmer, but if it is a different voltage you have to check into a different type of dimmer. [who] ohmboy71
The type of dimmer used depends upon the type of lights you choose to use. There is only one type of magnetic (inductive) dimmer but there are two types of electronic dimmers…”Leading Edge” & “Trailing Edge”. These dimmers are not applicable for some types of lighting.

Ok…
A magnetic dimmer will dim regular incandescent lamps at 120 volt.
A magnetic Low Voltage dimmer will dim both line voltage 120v and magnetic low voltage (12v).
An electronic dimmer will dim electronic transformers and or line voltage 120 volt incandescents. Mixing them will cause hum – buzz- filiment singing, etc. [who] glycopure
