Fluorescent Lighting would be a cheap alternative. If you have existing outlets nearby you can get fluorescent lights that hang from the ceiling and the tubes are not expensive either (less than $20 for each fixture with 2 tubes) [who] jfirebird6
hanging lights with cost and energy efficient lighting is advisable. not only does it diffuse lights better (since it is lower), you can even have the option to choose what style or design you want for your hanging lights..especially if you have a theme for your gym or not, the preferences over plain recessed fluorescent lighting is plenty.
