I brought a red ear slider home today. Everything is done, I even fed it. How can I start the lighting routine?

I brought it home…fixed it’s tank up nice and put him in. Let him rest a while…then fed him. I just was confused at the lighting. When should I put it on? Tonight? in the morning? How can I start his routine ya know? Also, how many pellets of food should go into the tank for one feeding? Thanks! =)

Put it on sometime in the morning and turn it off sometime at night, it should be on for roughly 12 hours, maybe a little more. A timer is a great and convenient way to keep a routine going and it makes your life easier. If the tank is in your room, then you should try to co ordinate the times your light is on with the times you sleep, it can be a pain if your trying to sleep and the light is on lol. Also for food, it depends on what kind of food your feeding, some food is bigger then others. But most people agree that you should feed it whatever it can eat in 10 minutes. If its the little pellets put a couple pinches of it. Try things out, youll get the hang of it and what your turtle wants to eat and should eat, dont give it too much though. Also try to give it a balanced diet, turtles can be picky when it comes to food, so give it a balanced diet. Different types of commericial food, krill, shrimp, and things like that. And every once in a while give it some fish. Google red ear sliders, there are many websites with lots of information. [who] Vincent

leave it by the window and let nature do its job
but you wanna use artificial lighting…
have good light and rock color combination, I have black and dark green rocks with a black light above, and it really makes the green stand out
you can also use brown and desert tan with a fluorescent light in a yellow screen and that works to. [who] Charlene L
RES are also living things and all living things need time to rest and sleep.
As such, you should regulate their lighting timings according to the natural light time………. [who] etchemzee

Mimic natural light. Leave the light on during the day for 8-12 hours.
Pellets should be a supplement, not the major food. Good foods are earthworms, bait fishes, and liver you have dusted in bone meal. [who] oikos
