How will Vancouver handle the lighting of the Olympic Flame in 2010 at the Winter Olympics?
David M asked:
The opening ceremony will be inside, in an arena, for the first time ever. The Olympic flame is always outdoors, where people all over the city can see it. But the people at the opening ceremony would want to see the lighting live, not just on some video screen. So, how will they get around this problem?

They will just light the torch indoors. [who] Regardless
I would think the heat of the torch would dissipate before it reached anything flammable… I would hope anyhow! [who] q2tango
i don’t know. I wish did. [who] I’m better than you
My guess will be that they will probably send a runner outside to the base of the torch when it is time to light the flame, and have him or her light it and stand next to it for a few minutes. Since just about everything in these next Games is going to be shown or carried live on TV anyway, it won’t be difficult to do this. Vancouver is practically on the US’s west coast- it’s just on the other side of the border from the city of Seattle, which means it’s on Pacific Standard Time at that time of year- which in turn makes it easy for NBC to carry events live. Curling, eh? [who] MOKS
