How to install light switch to turn on wall outlet?

Pregalicious Trophy Wife asked:

Pregnant and nesting, I’m bothered by our lack of efficient light switches. Our retard landlords turned the garage into a master bedroom before we moved in and did a frighteningly terrible job. No light switches ANYWHERE.

We have to cross the entire room in the dark to turn on the light, and I’ve hated it since we moved in. We do, however, have 4 outlets in the room- 1 of which I would like to hook up to a light switch. But how?

I’m no electrician- but I have installed my share of dimmer switches and fixtures and know how respect electricity. Thanks in advance for your advice!
I already have those lights that you turn on/off with a foot switch… it’s just an enormous hassle.

Just imagine- a prego dancing around in the dark searching for the switch, stepping on the cat, dirty laundry, tripping herself… it’s not a happy sight.

If you have a plug near the bed get a lamp that you touch to turn on, and touch to turn off. There is no easy way to install switches in a circuit without going into the wall. I thought this might be a solution. Hope it helps. [who] William D

If you want to install a switch to a plug you will have to install the switch where you want it, run a wire to the plug you want to switch and “open and close” the hot wire through your new switch.

I do except email if you want more info. [who] GG

This is probably the most pathetic thing I have ever written but have you considered getting a clapper?

You could hook up a switch to an outlet without a lot of hassle if the outlet is wired from the attic. If not you will have to either tear out the wall boards or possibly take off the baseboard molding and run the wires along the bottom of the wall – which might not be the safest thing you could do.

If you can get to the wires, disconnect the outlet wire from the power source. All you have to do is run a new wire from the hot end (you just disconnected), down through the wall to a switch. Cut the black wire (no reason to cut the white) and hook it up to the switch. Then back to the wire that leads to the outlet.

If you can change switches and outlets you can do this. Just make sure you use junction boxes with covers and wire nuts to make the connections.

Or- Get a clapper! [who] bmcbrewer

Switching a receptacle and installing a switch in a finished room involves fishing wires through the walls. Not an undertaking for the faint at heart. Or the inexperienced.

Considers a remote control unit like this:

Plug the receiver into an outlet and plug a lamp into the receiver. Push the button and bingo, the light goes on and off. [who] John himself
