  1. DON says:

I’m paying about $0.20 per kwH in my area. A 100 watt bulb would use .8 kwH if left on for 8 hours. The cost to run it would be $0.16.

A CFL with an equivalent light output uses about 23 watts – 1/4 of the amount. It would cost about $0.04 to leave on for 8 hours.

Decent quality CFL’s can often be had for a dollar or so (avoid the ones at the dollar stores) at places like Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s and WalMart. It’s possible for the bulb to pay for itself just by energy savings alone in less than 100 hours. With a payback period like that, it doesn’t pay to wait for the old style bulbs to burn out first.
