How do I connect a lighting fixture with only a black and white wire?

Connect it up the same way as the old one, in other words black to black and white to where the other black wire connected. If it has a bare wire or green wire connect it to the metal box or to the bare ground wire inside the fixture box. [who] Wired
Hook the white wire on the fixture to the white wire in the box and the black wire to the other colored wire. It will work either way but you would have the larger part of the socket powered instaed of the center one if you wired it backwards. It would not be as safe and may not even work with cfl bulbs. The light needs a common/ground and a power wire. If you’re current fixture is still attached to the house wiring, can you see if one of the house wires is white? If it’s old wiring, both wires may be black or blackish-gray. You’ll need a non-contact voltage tester to find which wire is “hot” and which is ground. Don’t take chances! The test is less than $20 and will save you from getting shocked or worse. The better testers have a sensitivity dial which allows you to hone in on the one wire that’s hot. If you’re unsure, please call an electrician. [who] Rick
if you look in the gang box you will see the white wires wire nutted together,but it sounds like the 2 black wires are the break in the circuit.if you have a multi meter try finding which black wire is hot with switch on,that’s the one you wire the black wire from the fixture with.wiring the white wire to the other black wire,make sure you find and wire in the ground wire,that’s what makes it all work.
