Electrical boxes come with bracing brackets built in. [who] Joseph C
if you use a surface mount light fixture it not to bad of a job. you can remove the electric line from recessed light, there should be enough wire to reconnect to the new light. place the new light over the hole of the old hole of the recessed light [who] doogie006
Leave your recess lighting as is and put them on a dimmer for mood lighting.
Add a switch and box seperately for room lighting.
They make a plastic box made for ceiling fans which can be added by finding a ceiling joist/stud and cutting the hole so the box straddles the stud (ceiling fan remodel box) [who] Toeless_Joe_Jackson
Remove the recessed light and install a 4″ round junction box. Plaster around the box, once it is dried install fixture. [who] willk_500
you can buy ceiling boxes with brackets on them that will nail ot the studs. The problem may be the drywall hole after you have taken out the recessed lighting.
You may have to cut out a section of the drywall and replace the section with a new piece and cut out the opening for the ceiling box. All this will depend on how big the recessed lighting hole was to begin with.
When I do this I will find the stud and cut the drywall one half the thickness of the stud on both ends and then install 2 2X4’s on the sides. This will give me a good spot to nail the drywall up and not have to worry about it sagging. Good luck [who] fordman
