how can I test to see if my new (old) home’s wiring for exterior lighting still works?

The lamp doesn’t work, but before I go to Home Depot to pick up a new one, I want to make sure that the circuitry is still functional. What’s the easiest (and least painful:) way to check?

Get either a cicuit tester or a Volt/multimeter. Those should be pretty painless. [who] mac_guy_ver
follow Mac Guy Ver’s answer if you have some sort of knowledge in practical electricity, otherwise, call a qualified electrician to avoid exposing yourself from electrocution and other hazards (ie. Fire). [who] tata romy
they have sensors that will beep when you hold them close to live circuits.
There’s one built into the handle of my wire strippers.
It’s about $20.
just turn on the switches to the lights & hold the sensor close to the fixture.
if it beeps, you got power.
turn off switches & double-check that you don’t get a signal.
you can even follow wiring through the wall by following the beeps. [who] propreno
