I am just getting into photogrpahy and I recently got the offer to take pictures at a wedding. I have been looking at umbrella lighting, but don’t really know what to go toward. What should I look for? Which lights are best, brand, style, watts, etc…

I own a Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm lens/wide angle and macro lens. I have taken beautiful photos outside with natural light, but when it comes to taking nice portraits at home-it doesn’t look right. I would like to take photographs and have Rembrandt lighting on my subjects. I would like the opinions of photographers/graphic designers-and anyone else that seriously knows. Thank you very much for your input.

How does photography external lighting work?

Francesca asked:

I have a canon powershot sx10 and i am looking to create a cheap beginner home studio. I’m wondering what will I need (lights, umbrellas, etc) and when I take a picture how does the external flash work? Is it attached to the camera itself via a cord? Or is the flash triggered when I take a picture? I’m not talking about the flash on the camera, I’m talking about the lamps. I’ve been photographing all my life but never used ‘professional’ lighting kits before and am interested in learning to use them.

I’m trying to start my own photography business and I need some portable lighting. I want it to be easy to move around, as I will be going to people’s homes, but I would like to spend the least amount of money possible without sacrificing quality. Any suggestions would help me out a lot.
I would also like the kind of lights that flash whenever to take a picture not the kind that stays on the whole time.
