I have a fluorescent lighting controller for one of my fish tanks that is rated for a 600mm x 26mm diam 18w tube. Power supply is 240v 50Hz. Can I safely put a longer tube (ie 900mm) in this unit?
I also have a controller for a 450mm tube at 15w and would like to know how much more light I can get this to power.

Sally asked:

I was originally thinking a FO set up, but if I can just use the lighting that comes with the tank, I would buy some live sand and live rock. That way, In a year or 2, I can just replace the lighting and get corals and anemones to make it a reef tank when my financial rescoures are better. How much would MH, T-5, or compact flourescent lighting be for a 55 gallon tank?

I am looking for the most cost effective lighting. I have a 55 gallon right now with a hood and standard flourescent bulbs. Is it possible I could just change the bulbs to special reef ones for around $30 at my local pet store or do I need to buy new fixtures. I am going to buy anenomes and jellylike looking plants. Any help would be great thanks!

Please be specific, suggesting brands would be really helpful, links also! I don’t really know much about lighting except it should be 5000-6700 or something like that. Also would coralife compact fluorescent bulbs work good for a planted 10 gallon?

Mmmmm a bit fishy asked:

I have just bought a tank 36×18x24 and the light they gave me for it is 18 watt florescent light.
I personally think it is far to low for plant life.

I don’t want a bright tank because i have read Tetras do not like to much.
What would you advise for this tank?
Keeping in mind that i need light for a heavily planted tank.
Will my plants die with the lighting i have at the moment?
