How much lighting should I have for my saltwater aquarium?
Garrett Moy asked:
I am currently converting my 20g long planted tank into a saltwater aquarium. I am running a 2 x 31 watt t5 bulbs. One is 10,000k and the other is a Actinic. Would this be sufficient lighting to maintain sps corals since a 20 long is more shallow than a 20 tall? or would I have to upgrade my lighting fixture?

What type of lighting does live rock need?
Al asked:
I want to make my 30 gallon a little nano reef tank but at the moment i’m planning fish only with live rock. So does live rock need that full spectrum lighting to grow or does it go fine under just your average fluro aquarium lights?
People i know what live rock is and when i say ‘grow’ i would’ve thought you understood that people mean the organisms on the rock.

What size aquarium light should I get for my planted tank?
chickingirl19 asked:
I read that a good rule of thumb is watts for every gallon? I have a 29gallon aquarium, so 29-58 watts of light? I find that a huge difference. I also find it especially difficult to find a light with this wattage to be the correct size for my tank. It seems the higher the wattage, the longer the light. But if I go any smaller in size, the wattage is reduced. I also read that 2 fluorescent lights may be used, but my hood will only house one light. My plants require low-medium light, and low-medium growth rate, ph of 6.0-8.0, so they’re generally easy plants to look after. I am experienced keeping Angels, but I can’t seem to keep a plant alive! I am trying! There are HUGE benefits with plants and my Angels are happier. Every article I read about lighting for plants contradicts another article I read. One article says that the K rating means nothing, and another article’s author swears by using 5000-10000K lights. WHAT do I get? Help!
I mean 1-2 watts for every gallon!

How much light do guppies need or prefer?
Gumdrop Girl asked:
I keep my guppies in the kitchen, but it’s dark in there. They don’t show any problems from being kept in the dark all day, but they really perk up when I come home and turn the lights on. A lot of fish don’t do well with direct light, but should I leave the lights on while I’m at work? I’d prefer not to waste electricity, but if it keeps my guppies happy… Your thoughts, please.

How much light is required for java moss to thrive?
ninjaaa! asked:
I know java moss is the kind of plant that you can just leave in water and it will grow, but I’m wondering what kind of light it thrives under. It is a low-light plant – does that mean it CAN survive with very little light, or does it mean that it THRIVES under very little light? (ie, is it possible for java moss to suffer because it is getting too much light?)
So basically, the more light the better?

What type of lighting do I need for corals?
steven asked:
I have a 30″ 29 gallon setup ready to go. But I am having so much difficulties trying to decide what type of lighting to go with. I really like the actinic lights for nocturnal activities. What type of lighting do I get to keep all to most corals. I really like the Favia corals alot along with other soft corals. What would be the best and cheapest light source? Metal Halide, T5HO, CFL??
