Can anyone suggest the best type of lighting for our house?

I understand your dilema. I have an antique stone home that had the same problems. I didn’t want to tear into the walls so I went for surface wiring on the wood baseboards. You don’t even notice it as it is painted the same color as the baseboard. The electrician was also able to access the attic too so we ran the electric from the basement outside through a pvc pipe up to the attic. (I painted it first) Once the wires were in the attic it was easy to access the second floor ceilings to add any lighting, ceiling fans etc. I use a lot of lamps on the first floor which gives a soft feel of light which is nice.
