A lot of people complain that fluorescent lighting (which just has a few monochromatic wavelengths) makes them less attractive. Bars and night clubs have low lighting because it hides imperfections and makes people look better. Is there something about blemishes that makes them reflect certain wavelengths of light better than healthy skin? Can LED light arrays be made with certain wavelengths that make different types of skin appear the same shade? What about filters on cameras?

This restaurant has no windows and lighting is an issue. We want a comfortable atmosphere with lighting that helps relieve the cave-like feeling the restaurant has with no windows. This is a high quality restaurant, so dim lighting is usually wanted, but we don’t want the lighting to be too dim. any suggestions?

I have three light on my rear garage that blink like they are on some sort of timer. They go on for about 10 sec and then off for 10, never varies. There is apparently no switch for these lights either. I’m going to install a switch, but I would first like to know what is causing them to flash. I have access to the rear of the lights, but don’t see anything that might be the cause. I’ve changed out the bulbs. From what I can see by tracing the wires in the attic, there is nothing there either.
They are coach lights. I’ve looked at them pretty close and I do not believe they are triggered by motion or dusk/dawn, but since there seems not to be a switch that would make sense. I have put in standard incandesent 40W and 18W compact flouesents bulbs and they both turn off and on the same way. The garage has its own breaker box, and they still do this even with everything turned off. They three light turn off and on together. Thanks for all your suggestions.
Great! I found the sensor. It was located near an eave on the back of the garage, and I can hear it cycling. Adjusting it didn’t do anything, but I’m going to swap in a new one and see if that does the trick.

Lighting in a home with low ceilings. Any suggestions?

Genius Cook asked:

The ceilings throughout our home are 95 inches or 2.4 meters high. Low indeed. Most of the house has wooden ceiling beams. I am trying to figure out a way to better “light up the house” and am in need of good suggestions.
In one room we’ve solved the problem with two floor lamps and a halogen lamp on the upright piano.
In another room I’ve 4 wall lamps (total eight 40 what bulbs) – but it still isn’t enough. But more importantly, it’s in the kitchen that we need to have more light. The ceilings have wooden beams about 10 / 12 inches apart and I’ve put sheet rock between the beams. I’ve incased 3 decorative halogen lamps (transformer hidden above the sheet rock). They give off light but it’s not enough and in any case the lamps burn out at least once a year and cost nearly 10 US dollars each to replace. I’m sure they also consume plenty of electricity.
Ah, finally – I do need to mention that we’ve neon lighting under the cupboards – above the sink, the burners and above two work counters.
Please let me know if you need more (precise) information so to give me a detailed answer.
Thanks in advance for you help.
karadann… why don’t you come arond and blow out my halogen 100 watt bulb
karadann… why don’t you come around and blow out my halogen 100 watt bulb. Could be very lightful

We have recessed lighting throughout our home. No more lamps and having to buy so many bulbs, or have to have all those cords around. We had dimmer switches put on as well.

Answer: Beauty is a result of function.
To make your home cosy, approach it from a practical standpoint – follow these simple rules.
*Daylight (intense blue-white light – 6500 degrees Kelvin) – excellent for outdoor security. It actually causes the brain to increase seratonin production creating a mild calmative affect. This may help reduce aggressive behavior close to home. It works.
*Daylight – great for garage/reading/study/work areas.
*Full Spectrum (all colors of the rainbow – natural outdoor light) – best for these areas, because it increases ability to see details (color contrast depth).
*Pure White light (5000 to 5500 degrees K) – best for kitchen/laundry/bath. It doesn’t alter the appearance of food/clothes/skin/makeup color.
*Cool White (slight green tint – 4100 degrees K) – good for dinette/breakfast nook/side lighting.
*Soft/Warm White (orange yellow to lemon yellow – 2700 to 3500 Degrees Kelvin). Mood lighting/hallway/tv area/side light,
